How does SLN work?
SLN Learning Network is a partnership in learning with SUNY SLN Campuses. SLN works with SUNY Campus to provide unparalleled online learning experiences at accredited state learning institutions. We work to provide our campuses with educational support, training and technology. This support gives students the opportunity to learn online in virtual classrooms that foster intensive interaction, individual attention, high standards, and enhanced learning outcomes.
Taking Courses
With SLN, you sign on to your online courses via the internet or web. You receive support and instruction from instructors who are also online, and have received special training and guidance in online instruction. You develop your own schedule within certain limits, including your professor's expectations and the course's start and end dates. Based on the course requirements and the type of course, you might study on your own, interact with the instructor or other students online or on campuse, work in groups, participate in class discussions, and submit assignments - all online, or in combination of online and on-campus work.
Like any course, SLN courses at SUNY campuses involve a time commitment. For each credit hour, plan on three to four hours of coursework per week. For instance, a three-credit course would typically involve nine to 12 hours of work weekly.
From all that work, however, you gain substantial benefits. Online learning encourages feedback from all students, not just those who might raise their hands in a traditional classroom. The variety of options accommodate a wide range of learning styles. And because SUNY professors create these courses-in conjunction with SLN - you'll draw directly from the instructor's depth of knowledge in an easy-to-use format.
Online course support
Every SUNY Campus has a unique personality, and online courses are no different. Your campus will provide you with login information, help desk information, and information on getting support for your online course. SLN supports the campuses with:
- SLN HelpDesk. If you need help navigating SLN, this is the place to go. Available 24 hours, 7 days a week via email, or by telephone during operating hours.
- Training and teaching support - online instructors participate in a wide variety of educational and professional development - from technology training to working in virtual online worlds. SLN is involved in online educational activities around the world, and we share that with our SUNY online faculty, enriching their online experience - and yours.
- Technology Support - Our campuses receive the best in technology support - from the latest versions of online learning systems to access to helpdesk support 24/7. We're there for our instructors, so they can be there for you.
